Dressing Up Your Boring Old Cake with these Decoration Ideas

Are you interested in learning more about baking and cake decoration? Do you daydream about creating beautiful, unforgettable desserts that allow you to express your creativity in the kitchen? If so, you are not alone. Currently, there is the trend towards innovation and fun in the kitchen. Here are a few tips to get you started in learning how to dress up your boring old cake.

The Butter Cream Cake Finally Grows Up

What happened to the old days of butter cream icing and plastic decorations on top of cakes? Well, those days are still alive and well, but there has been a definite trend toward more sophisticated and homemade desserts. As the idea of hearth and home continues to ripen in our minds, more and more people, both men and women, have gradually migrated to the kitchen in search of more ways to express themselves with seasonal sundries.

Consult Books and Magazines to Get Ideas

There are so many books and magazines out there for the amateur or would-be gourmand. There is a book geared towards just about ever interest and skill level, so surely you will be able to find something that inspires you to create your own dazzling desserts in your kitchen. Clip recipes and make sure your kitchen is stocked with all the right baking utensils, cake decorating tools and ingredients.

Easy Ways to Make a Simple Cake More Interesting and Elegant

There are many easy ways to make a simple cake more interesting and more elegant. One of these ways is to add seasonal fruits and nuts. Dried fruits such as peaches, nectarines, pineapples and all kinds of berries can add a lovely and touch to an otherwise plain cake or dessert. Another easy way to add a nice touch to an otherwise plain dessert is to sprinkle nuts. Pine nuts, almond slivers, peanuts, crushed walnuts and other nuts can add a whole new dimension to an otherwise bland or boring dessert or cake.

Drizzle Your Way to Exquisite Flavor

There is another easy way to add a nice touch to an otherwise dull or bland dessert, and that is by drizzling flavor on your cake or dessert. There are many types of drizzles: think raspberry syrup, chocolate or white chocolate syrup, blueberry syrup, vanilla cream, caramel, honey, creams, sauces—well, you get the idea. You can combine different flavors of syrups and drizzle them onto a complementary dessert. Simply drizzling a little something on your cake, and perhaps adding a bit of complementary flavor to your cake.

Fondant – Come to It When You Are Ready

Once you have experimented with livening up your simple desserts, breads and cakes, then perhaps you are ready for something more. One of the most complicated cake icings, the holy grail of cake icings, if you will, is fondant. Fondant is a thick icing with play dough-like consistency. It provides cakes with an irresistibly silken texture and look. Many people are drawn to fondant simply on the grounds of its visual appeal, and it certainly is lovely. However, fondant is also notoriously difficult to handle and work with. But if you are serious about baking and cake decoration, fondant is something that you will eventually want to tackle on your own. One of the most important things you can do is to seek hands-on advice from an expert. Take a class at the local community college or culinary institute if you really want to get your hands on fondant. Or try it at home with a cooking and cake decorating DVD or video. Fondant really does require that you get a visual step-by-step guideline on how to decorate with this difficult icing.
